"SOUND OF SCALPAY" The first
of two sister ferries, bought from Amsterdam City Council. She
was completely refitted by Garvel Clyde at Greenock before entering
service in July 1995. Her transformation included removal of her existing diesel-electric
machinery, and fitting new Caterpillar engines coupled to an azimuth
drive unit at each end. These
provide a high degree of manoeuvrability. Her entry into service
allowed the former Sealink ferry Sound of Seil to be retired. Double screw steel motor roll on/roll off passenger/vehicle ferry. Bow and stern ramps. Built 1961, by Arnhemsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij N.V., Arnhem, Holland (Yard No. 403) "SOUND OF SANDA" Another ex-Amsterdam ferry, which entered service with Western Ferries in the summer of 1996 after full refitting by Garvel Clyde at Greenock. She was built in Germany in 1963, and has similar machinery to her almost identical sistership 'Scalpay'.
